Seed arrivals! March 24, 2008

Filed under: garden — Jenny @ 5:13 pm

I’m sooo excited!  The first of my tomato seeds arrived today!  I’m hoping the rest will arrive on Monday.  It’s taking everything in me to not open the package right away.  But I know it’s better to wait and plant all my seeds at once.  It’s just so hard waiting!  I’ve received an e-mail from one company last week saying they had shipped my seeds immediately.  E-bay sellers really like me, because usually I’m very fast to pay.  The comments left for me even say “Great E-bayer!”  One of the sellers I picked in part because it’s actually a local seller.  Unfortunately, they’ve (?he’s?) been having some health problems, so it took him a few days to get back to me.  (The store name is Dave’s something, so I’m pretty sure it’s a guy I’ve been dealing with, I think.)  I offered to go pick it up from him if it would be quicker, but honestly, if he gets it in the mail Monday, I’ll probably get it Tuesday.  I bought tomatoes and white wonder cucumbers from his store.  I’ve been reading up on them and it sounds like they’re a relatively easy plant.

The garden bug is spreading.  I think my friend Nick was already interested in a garden, but when I described mine the other night he got really excited.  He called me the next night at midnight to ask me about sowing seeds.  I think I’ll offer him some of my seedlings, especially if I get a good turnout on the heirloom varieties.  They were on the list of people I was going to give veggies to this summer, though…so I guess that’s gone now J

Vegetable Garden March 19, 2008

Well, I’ve decided I want a vegetable garden this summer.  As usual, I’m pretty sure I’ve bitten off more than I can chew.  Right now I have zucchini, yellow squash, okra, cantaloupe, and cucumber seedlings taking over my living room.  I’ve already made a few mistakes, like everything I read said you had to start your seeds 6-8 weeks before transplanting them outside.  Well, so far everything but the New Mexico pepper seeds germinated in half the time they said it would take.  So now I have to figure out what I’m going to do with these seedlings for the next month until I can put them in the ground!  Also, I’m doing things in the wrong order.  I really should have started my tomato and pepper seeds (which I’m still waiting to arrive) first.

Here’s what I’m planting this summer:

  • zucchini and yellow squash,
  • okra,
  • cantaloupe,
  • regular and white wonder cucumbers white wonder cucumbers,
  • Nebraska wedding Nebraska wedding tomatoes and yellow pear tomatoes Yellow pear tomatoes,
  • and New Mexico and Bolivian rainbow peppers Bolivian rainbow peppers

On a positive side, I have an image of wanting to prepare dinner this summer and just walking outside and picking my meal.  Doesn’t that sound cool?
